Position Summary

  • Location: Position can be remote for the first 3-5 months, then must be New Orleans based.
  • Position Breakdown: 30% Admin, 30% Grant Writing, 20% Digital Fundraising, 10% Research, 10% Board Management

This position will work to expand and diversify The Black School’s (TBS) funding sources beyond current streams and towards the long term sustainability. We’re seeking a resourceful and personable development specialist to organize fundraising initiatives and source a range of donor support for our nonprofit organization. Must be invested in the maintaining of our new alternative model for institution building with passion for realizing sustainable approaches that meet the specific needs of organizations serving BIPOC communities.  

The development coordinator will be responsible for creating digital fundraising campaigns to promote the organization across media platforms. Must have excellent writing and networking skills and possess experience with campaign and membership management. A successful candidate is able to plan initiatives in advance and manage multiple tasks at once.

Workplace Model

Position is intended to be full time, but will start with a 3 month contractual period. Candidates should be New Orleans based or willing to relocate within 3-5 months of employment. With the anticipated early 2026 opening of The Black Schoolhouse a hybrid remote/in person schedule will begin with a minimum 3 days in person required per week. Your day-to-day will be filled by beautiful, art, a community garden, energetic youth, and purpose.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and grow a capital campaign to build an organization endowment and high income.
  • Maintain and grow our digital fundraising program. 
  • Manage the distribution of TBS created Member rewards program (art and merchandise).
  • Manage and maintain current grant prospecting, research, stewarding, application, and reporting process.
  • Regularly meet with TBS departments to track impact for grant deliverables using .
  • Manage transition of TBS to new CRM system 
  • Identify new donors and maintain good relationships with existing donors including scheduling meetings and preparing meeting notes.
  • Process donations and prepare and send acknowledgement letters
  • Develop a database of donors
  • Maintain Board relations including reviewing Bylaws, scheduling meetings, taking minutes, distributing minutes, and overseeing Board dues
  • Continually work to develop fundraising strategies that move away from existing problematic patterns in the philanthropic field.
  • Two years of relevant or transferrable professional experience in development, finance, or another relevant field.
  • Good knowledge of digital fundraising strategies.
  • Excellent networking and communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent time management skills with an eagerness to meet deadlines
  • Experience and proficiency with copywriting
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to be a self-starter, take initiative, and require little day-to-day direction to be successful

Experience and Qualifications:

  • A bachelors degree in related field – OR – 3-6 years experience in fundraising/development.
  • Proficiency with grant writing
  • Experience with CRM software
  • Capability to manage projects and teams in a Black, social justice-rooted organization
  • Strong contingency planning and time management skills, with an eagerness to meet deadlines
  • Ability to be a self-starter and take initiative, with the motivation to act resourcefully and work independently with high attention to detail
