About Us

The Black School is a Black-Centered experimental art school teaching BIPoC and ally students to become agents of change in their communities through art & design education and programming based in radical African diasporic histories, prioritizing local community needs.

MISSION

The Black School uses art and activism to transform social realities through Black Love, healing, and self-determination. 

PROGRAMS

SCHOOL
The school is based on a workshop model designed to teach critical thinking and civic engagement through art-making that encourages participants to address community issues using creative activism methodologies.

FESTIVAL
Black Love Fest is a free one-day celebration open to the public that includes: student work exhibits, music performances, art installations by professional artists, food, vendors, workshops, and more.

DESIGN FIRM
The Black School: Design Studio is a full-service design firm providing community-centered graphic design services and creative consulting.

DESIGN APPRENTICESHIP
The Design Apprenticeship is a paid career training program where creative youth are taught graphic design through on-the-job training with an interdisciplinary approach.

PRINCIPLES

Regard for one's own well-being and happiness free and clear of white supremacist standards and indoctrination.
The quality or state of being sound in body, mind, and spirit, especially as an actively sought goal.
A form of feminism argues that sexism, class oppression, and racism are inextricably bound together and advocates for the liberation of both women and Black people.
Advocating for the reduction or elimination of prisons and the prison system, and replacing them with more humane and effective systems.
The defense of one's person or interests against external attack.
The quality or state of being sound in body, mind, and spirit, especially as an actively sought goal.
Effort directed towards the creation or enhancement of community among individuals within a regional area or with a common interest.
Advocating for complete social, political, and economic change from the perspective of Black people and for the liberation of all historically oppressed people.
The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
The basic and well accepted principle of fairness where the consequence of official policies should be the equal allocation of benefits among participants in an economy.
Removal of the domination of non-indigenous forces within the geographical space and different institutions of the colonized, as well as the decolonizing of the mind from the colonizers ideals.
